Redeeming Gift Cards

In the cart​

Customers enter the gift card code in the normal voucher (promotion code) field of the cart or the checkout. Spaces in the code are ignored, and upper and lower case don't matter.

  • Several gift cards can be used in one order.
  • When a gift card is worth more than the order, the rest stays on the gift card.
  • When it is worth less, the customer pays the rest with any payment method.
  • An expired gift card is refused with a message.
  • A gift card can only be used in its own sales channel (see When the gift card is created).

With the calculation type Means of payment, the cart, the order and the invoice show each gift card below the total ("Paid with gift card …"), followed by the Amount to pay. Customers can remove a gift card from the cart with the x next to it.

How a gift card affects the totals and the VAT depends on the calculation type.

The link /giftcard/redeem/{code} adds a gift card to the cart of the visitor and opens the cart. Use it in the gift card e-mail, in a QR code or on a printed card, e.g.:

When the cart is still empty, the gift card is kept and applied as soon as products are added.

Balance page​

On /giftcard/balance, anyone can enter a code and see the balance and the expiry date of a gift card. The page has a Use in my cart button for gift cards that can still be used. Link to this page from your footer, your FAQ or the gift card e-mail.

The balance page and the redeem links are rate limited, so codes can't be guessed: after 10 attempts in 10 seconds, 15 in a minute or 20 in five minutes from the same IP address, the visitor has to wait.

"Gift card" payment method​

When gift cards pay the whole order, there is nothing left to pay to a payment provider. For these orders, the plugin adds the payment method Gift card:

  • It is only offered when gift cards pay the complete order. It is then the only payment method, and selected automatically.
  • The payment is marked as paid right away.
  • Its availability rule "Gift card: nothing left to pay" is installed with the plugin.

You find it in Settings > Payment methods. On installation, it is added to all existing sales channels. Add it to sales channels you create later in Sales Channels > sales channel > Payment methods.

Gift cards can't pay for new gift cards​

Switch on Gift cards can't pay for new gift cards in the plugin configuration to stop customers from exchanging gift cards for new ones, e.g. to extend their validity. Redeemed gift cards then don't pay for gift card products in the cart.

Cancelled orders​

When an order that was paid with gift cards is cancelled, the amounts go back to the gift cards. You see this as a transaction "Revert transaction …: Order state: cancelled" in the details of the gift card.

Orders edited in the Administration​

Redeemed gift cards stay on the order when you edit it in the Administration.
